Seven Rules from Kleiner Perkins!
June 18, 2006

Want to get your software startup funded by Kleiner Perkins? They have seven rules you need to know about:
- Instant Value to customers - solve a problem or create value with the first use
- Viral adoption - Pull, not push. No direct sales force required
- Minimum IT footprint, preferably none. Hosted SaaS is best.
- Simple, intuitive user experience - no training required.
- Personalized user experience - customizable
- Easy configuration based on application or usage templates
- Context aware - adjust to location, groups, preferences, devices, etc.
If your startup follows five of these give Ajit Nazre a call, otherwise retool your business model or find another venture capital firm to work with. [via]
Update: The bullets above are from Don Dodge at Microsoft. When I use the [via] link I assume it provides adequate attribution for content found elsewhere. Evidently it was not good enough for Don as he sent me the following email:

Here is another rule for you. It is not polite or ethical to copy someone’s content without attribution. You copied my entire post word for word, without attributing the work to me. (via) doesn’t cut it. I suggest you modify your post and attribute it to Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing.

Don, if you are reading, please accept my apology. I saw your post this evening and thought it was interesting especially given a series of posts I am doing. I did NOT copy your entire post word for word - I DID cut and paste your bullet points and used the [via] link to provide attribution. I usually say something like, “as Don Dodge said in his post today…” I am not sure why I didn’t today.

Alexander,
I am a little sensitive on this because my content has been copied about 20 times in the past week without attribution, mostly by blogs looking to sell ads on topical content ripped off from legitimate sites. I understand your site doesn’t fall into that category.
You are welcome to copy in full or in part, anything I write…just provide attribution and a link.
Thanks,
Don Dodge
