C|Net acquires Austin Web 2.0 Company

December 7, 2005

ben.JPGBen Brown sent me an email yesterday explaining that C|Net was going to purchase Austin based Consumating (the dating site he created).  Consumating was created by Ben Brown and Adam Mathes. It began its life as a joke about online dating, but when people started using it to actually find dates, Ben got serious.  Consumating was the first dating site to use the ideas of tagging to help people find one another. The site uses a lot of Ajax.  It was designed by Mule with help and support from Lane Becker of adaptive path.

Ben will be moving to San Francisco and will continue to run Consumating.  C|Net is famous for giving guys like Ben quite a bit of freedom.  We are sorry to see Ben’s startup leaving Texas, but we wish him the best.  Terms of the deal?  Ben won’t say, but the rumor is that he got a big 6 figure check, an aggressive salary and great performance bonus opportuntity.  I was not able to confirm the number, but I was told it was a low 7 figure number…  Here is the announcement

Ben and I spoke on a panel at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas a couple of months ago.  After the panel we met at Chuy’s and I noticed Ben and Matt Mullenweg huddled in a corner talking about C|Net.  Later in the evening Ben suggested that he might be living in San Francisco soon, but I failed to put two and two together.  I wrote a blog post about the possibility that Consumating would have a better exit opportuntity than a traditionally VC funded Web 2.0 deal.

Congrats to him for his success.

I like the premise of the site, and the implementation but after spending some time there.. it seems to me that something is missing. Not sure what that may be, but I am sure it will improve with full time development.
